MAP Training

Medication Administration Program of Massachusstes

MAP Training

The Medication Administration Program of Massachusetts is a  certification that is  required for any employee working in a group home or day program that authorizes them to administer medication in that setting. MAP certification is taught by an RN MAP trainer who has gone through training by the state. Our MAP trainers also have additional training that ensures they can teach concepts to people with all learning styles. We use the curriculum provided by the state of MA, as well as supplemental materials created by Access Training Solutions to ensure that your employees have the best chance of success. This course can be taught fully in person, or in a hybrid model. We strive to ensure that the scheduling of training works for your agency. Please visit https://www.mass.gov/lists/map-policy-manual for specific guidance on MAP policy.

MAP Training

MAP certification requires a minimum of 16 hours of course instruction, although our in person course runs approx. 24 hours over 4 days. We have flexible options, including evening classes, and hybrid options.  Class sizes are generally 4-12 students.  Each student is added to a roster that is sent to CDDER so they can have access to  mapmass.com. Students are required to go through 9 units on MAP mass, pass a transcription pretest, and perform a medication administration pass.  Students will also be required to create a TMU account where all testing and certification is held. Training is generally held at your agency, and agency is required to purchase MAP training packets for all students. The link can be found here:  https://umassmed.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0J7zbua7hAohMq2

We provide an additional folder with more supplemental material for each student. All students are required to have a laptop or tablet for use. This can be provided by the agency or the student. A TV monitor is also required for training.

If the agency does not have space for training, we can discuss options of spaces to rent for trainings.

Testing options

We are happy to include testing in your training package.  If an agency would like to test their own students, we can assist you in getting set up for this option. This requires the agency to have a TMU account to manage testing for students. Students can take the knowledge test at home ( with proper internet access and laptop) or they can take it at your agency. Med Admin tests need to be taken at the agency. Students have 3 months to pass the two tests, with an option to take each test 3 times.

*** Transcription Management training*** please note that MAP does not test for transcription anymore. Therefore every agency must have a policy and training in place. Please see below about transcription management training support.

MAP Recertification

We offer MAP recertification, which is required every two years. This will include an assessment of Med Pass and transcription for each student.  It also includes a review of key MAP concepts and updates of MAP policy. This class is an average of 2-3 hours. Students/Agency will have access to the recertification immediately upon completion of class. No materials are required by agency.

MAP Retake Class

This course is specifically designed for students who have completed MAP in the past, but have struggled with study skills. They may also have ran out of time to test, or have been certified in the past and would like a different format of learning. This class is a "round table" style of learning that focuses on study skills, using games, flashcards, activities, and engagement of different learning styles. This requires a smaller class size so that instructor can work on individual study plans for each student. Please ask about this course to see if this would be a good option for your employee.

Medication Occurrence Training

This class is designed for students who may need support or re- training on MAP concepts if they have had Medication occurrences due to lack of skills, or MAP policy. This is generally a 2-3 hour class that covers Medication Math, common reasons for medication occurrences, MAP policy reminders, practice of safe medication administration. This class can be tailored to each agency if there are specific issues that need to be addressed.

Transcription Management Training

It is now a requirement that all agencies provide their own transcription management training, also known as TMMS. This requires a written policy, a TMM System Competency Evaluation Tool’ specific to the agency. Retraining is required with recertification. All MAP cert staff who are transcribing, performing accuracy checks or post and verifying orders, must be TMMS trained.  If your agency needs assistance creating a TMMS system we are happy to assist you. We can create policy, training materials, a transcription system, etc. Please inquire with the specific needs of your agency. We can create a training for you to train staff, or we can come in to do training sessions as needed.
